As conflicts emerge around the world, we are reminded of the immense sacrifices made by United States veterans who return home carrying the weight of their combat experiences.
Between 20–30 percent of these veterans report symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which may include social isolation, loss of interest in once-enjoyed activities, heightened anxiety, and distressing flashbacks.
Substance use, including alcohol and drug misuse, is unfortunately common among veterans as they attempt to cope with the lingering pain of their experiences. Even more alarming is the high rate of suicide among veterans.
In 2021 alone, 6,392 U.S. veterans died by suicide, reflecting an adjusted suicide rate of 32.1 per 100,000—approximately 1.5 times higher than the rate among non-veteran U.S. adults.
To address these challenges, AllHealth Network has partnered with Douglas County to receive referrals from Douglas and Arapahoe Veteran Service Offices for veterans seeking support with mental health and substance use concerns.
Thanks to ARPA funding provided through the Douglas County Board of County Commissioners, this program offers critical services to veterans in need, regardless of their ability to pay. AllHealth Network’s team includes therapists with lived experience as veterans or close connections to the veteran community.
Since the program launched in 2023, we have served approximately 84 veterans and their families.
It is essential to recognize that today’s war-related news coverage can evoke painful memories of past battles or the loss of comrades. Many veterans may find it difficult to share these feelings, often isolating themselves or turning to substances rather than seeking support.
Veterans with Medicaid or other public or private insurance can access care throughout the AllHealth Network system. If you or someone you know is struggling with postwar trauma, please contact AllHealth Network at www.allhealthnetwork.org or by calling 303-730-8858 for support.
Thank you for your support of our efforts.
Sincerely,
William Henricks, MBA, Ph.D.
